I am looking into buying a early model Bronco (1966 - 1977). I think that I am most interested in a 1977 model. Not sure though. I am having a hard time finding information about them. I have purchased a few manuals and books. I guess my main question is what engines came standard in the 1977 model? I know that they had a 302 V8, but you see a lot for sale with the 351. Is that normal? Will it hurt the frame to put that engine in? What models do you recommend? What is there towing capacity? What should I watch out for? I know rust is a big problem. Did all of the model have 4 wheel drive standard? Any thing else you can think of. I am early in the process of buying one and want to learn as much as I can. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks for your time.
The 1977 was the best year. The big plus was disc brakes. The 302 was the standard motor, but alot of people drop the 351 for more power. No problem with the frame.Check the floor boards for rust. I have a '69 and '75,and both had the same problems. From what I understand, all were 4 wheel drive. There's alot of aftermarket parts.so no problem there.
With the Jeep because of the short wheel base they only allow you to tow about 2000 lbs. Is this true with the Bronco? None of the manuals talk about towing at all.
As to the 351. That is great news.
Did they come with factory AC? And did the the rear wheels well come cut in some models that year or were they still flat like the earlier models?
Would you recommend this vehical for my first rebuild? Any speacial modifications that people do that I should watch for???
A lot of questions come up as I read more posts. Any ways, I live in North Carolina and they do car inspections once a year. If I buy a '76 or '77 am I going to have a hard time passing those inspections? If I am going to have problems what model years should I focus on then????
I hope there are some people from NC that could help me out here.
You have the same problem with the Bronco as with the Jeep as far as towing goes. Yes,the later models '76 and '77 did have ac.
None of them had the wheel wells cut out,you have to do that yourself, which is easy. All the tops are removable. As far as the trans,I have one stick and one auto.I like the auto best. It's the C4 trans Ford put in those trucks, and they work great.
I live in Pa.and have no problems with inspection. Because of the year, most things are exempt. There's a group in your area called ecbr-east coast bronco registry. There's alot of good people and they have great info. Hope this helps
74 and up. dana 44 frontend,74 no cat. to worry about for inspection. check any 4 wheel mag. look in the back for bronco parts. james duff etc. 302 is a good rebuild but again how much do you want to spend. it can be a money pit. it never seems to end. check with your local 4x4 shop and maybe they can turn you to someone. yes they all were 4x4 and they had rust problems. check floors, quarter panels, door jams. if its freshly painted look for those bubbles. buy cheep or find one that has what you want
to do and add the cost.broncos are papular so the cost is up anyway.if you are a wrench you should find a decent one under 2000. but if you are stuck on a 77 you may pay moore.i have had two 74's and together they cost me less then 6000, and then it begins. good luck and have fun and take your time.
