2020 Explorer Towing

I am thinking of buying a travel trailer. Does anyone have any thoughts or experience? The ones I like are dry weight 4500 pounds and the specs say towing capacity 5600 pounds. I know i would not travel with water onboard to save weight.

Payload willplay a big part. Check your capacity on the driver's door (yellow sticker). You are also limited to 560lbs tongue weight from what I see. DO NOT BELIEVE THE DEALER if (s)he tells you thye tongue weight is 400lbs. This may be a fully empty trailer with no propane tanks, battery or spare tire.
Anything you have added to the truck will be part of this number, including a weight distribution hitch, all people and gear.

scott91370 pretty much nailed it, pay attention to your payload. You bought an SUV, so I'm assuming there will be more than just yourself in the Explorer. Add up the weight of people, anything in the vehicle and the trailer's tongue weight and compare it to the cargo carrying capacity listed on the door jamb. Also, 4,500 dry weight could very easily be well north of 5k lbs ready to camp, even without water on board. Clothes, towels, toys, bedding, cooking stuff, propane, camp chairs, it all adds up pretty quickly.

You are limited to 55 sqft frontal area as well. That’s not going to be a very big camper to come in under that number.

wind loads are a killer on travel trailers. Realistically speaking, you are looking at an R-pod type camper to come in under your payload and frontal area constraints.
