I have my '22 F350 crew short bed 4x4, 7.3, 4:30 rear end on order. We had to take a long trip, so we rented a 250 4x4 crew long bed with 6.2 and 3:73 rear end. I'm pulling a 34' Jayco and the 250 is doing good, just low mpg at 7 mpg. Should I expect the same from my ordered set up? I'm pretty sure it should be better at getting up to speed and hopefully manage it better without all of the down shifts the 6 speed does.
Just wondering what others are getting with this setup.
Forgot to mention my trailer is about 8500 lbs. Didn't have time to weigh with the rental truck. It is a big difference from my current truck. It is a 150 CC with 3.5 ecoboost and it does fine for short distances, I just have to take it easy and not drive with any wind. I am also finding out the current trailer is on the small side so eventually will move to a 5th wheel, hence the 4:30 gears in my ordered rig.
I bet your 7.3/4.30 truck will get 1MPG better (than the 6.2/3.73 truck), maybe more. The engine will have an easier time and the transmission will keep the engine RPMs closer to where they need to be.
My trailer is ~8500 loaded and I'm towing with a F-250 6.2L/4.30 6-speed. Just finished a ~2300 round trip (PNW to Southern Nevada) that included mountain passes and a couple of tanks with a stiff headwind. Overall it turned in 8.3 for the round trip with a high of 9.91 and a low of 6.61 - all hand calculated. Average speed is ~62. There are a lot of different variables in play but I would agree with the consensus that the 7.3L/4.30 is going to deliver better mileage.

Thanks for the info all. I have another trip planned for June, so I will probably be renting another truck as I still don't have a VIN yet. I'm not sure what type we'll get for that rental. I was debating about selling my 150 and buying a used 250 or 350, but don't want the possibility of having any mechanical problems with a used truck. At least with the rental I can call Enterprise to bring another one so we can continue the trip.
