I have an original 1945 1/2 ton pickup which lost drive the very first time I tried to take it to a show last summer. The 45s were built from spare parts so has a driveshaft but the older narrower banjo rear. I've been told the shear pin failed, so took off the driveshaft from the rear, but the stub has a key in it and looks like it will take a lot of force to pull it off. Should I get a two claw puller and press that off? There's nothing written with clear instructions how to get this apart or how to diagnose or replace the shear pin. There's no you tube I could find on this. Any help would be much appreciated-I've already considered selling this sweet little truck due to the difficulty getting information. Thanks in advance.
I've torn apart a few of the bigger versions of your rear axle. Ones that come on the 1.5 ton trucks of the same year. I dont know of any shear pins. Maybe the 1/2 tons are different. I just pulled my pinion out to check bearings etc... After taking the nut off the end of the pinion shaft and a quick tap, the yoke came right off. I guess now that I think about it, I dont remember noticing what held the pinion gear onto the shaft. I was more concerned that the teeth looked good.
There is no shear pin in those axles. It is probably one of the axle hub keys. The driveshaft yoke is on a tapered pinion shaft with a key, it is unlikely that it is sheared.

So I pulled apart the right rear and the axle shaft is snapped off. That must be metal fatigue because it was gently pulling away from a red light when it broke. I'd rather find a qualified mechanic who could find the part and swap it out. How would one find an antique Ford mechanic within reasonable distance?
Why would you need a antique Ford mechanic to replace the axle shaft if you took it apart?
The hardest part I can see is finding a good axle shaft to replace the broken one.
I know some axles set end play by shimming 1 axle to set it and still not bad.
Is it a 2 piece axle - shaft & pressed on wheel hub?
Do they say with a new shaft you need a new hub and the splines from the axle make them in the hub?
AMC had this setup up till they shut down in 1988.
Moser https://www.moserengineering.com/ makes 1 piece axles to replace the 2 piece AMC axles as you cant get shafts or hubs.
I dont know if they could help or not.
Good luck
