How common is a rear seal oil leak on a 1989 f250 with a 5.8? I've heard it is very common.
I have an 89 in good shape, with only 60,000 miles. Problem is the truck has sat for quite a while. I really only need it for snowplowing my 800' driveway, I've recently been working on it, fixing brake lines, power steering hoses. fuel lines etc. I don't want to dump time and $$ into it if a bad seal is likely.
Well if/when it starts weeping out the rear main, you just to off the oil periodically and go about your business. All of these engines eventually develop a rear main leak (hell front one too but that's easier fix), unless it's an Exxon Valdez type of failure (never seen or even heard of one) it's just a nuisance and not much more.
What you should be more concerned about is your transmission, plowing is rough on them. I hope you're using your transfer case's low range while pushing the snow, that extra gearing helps a lot with transmission loads.
The truck is nearly 35 years old...so is any factory installed rubber. It shrinks and leaks. Replace it or let it leak as there is nothing else you can do.

I guess your right, a little leak I can live with.
