Maintenance first... Clean MAF, air filter, throttle body, PCV, check for vacuum leaks, new plugs, check coils and boots, replace fuel filter.
Apparently people really like the 5 star tuners... do some searches on that.

Welcome to the forum. I had a '03 with the 5.4L, and it was the best truck I have had so far. I wish I could have kept it, but I needed more for a 5th wheel. Anyway, you are never going to be able to get enough "more power" out of the 5.4L to satisfy your wants. You will just be throwing money at it and not ever getting what you want. The 5.4L is a great engine, but it is what it is. You want more power, get another truck with a bigger engine. I don't want to badmouth the 5.4L...like I said, it was the best truck I've had so far.

Had my 99 5.4 for 15 years. Good truck, no *****. Bought a 01 with a 7.3. The 7.3 does thing's loping along at 1700 rpm that my 5.4 was screaming at 4500 rpm in second gear to pull off while towing a pop up. The 5.4 got 11.25 mpg hgwy amd 8.5 towing. The 7.3 gets 17.25 and 10.5 towing a tt that weighs twice as much and is 4 times bigger than that popup.
I suspect axle gears will give more ***** for cheaper than engine mods.
