2006 Ranger alternator
My truck died the other day while driving and the battery was dead, I was able to get it home and put a charger on it. The next morning I started it and checked the alternator and it was putting out 14.5 amps, I disconnected the positive cable and the truck kept running, problem solved. I drove 15 miles and checked the alternator again and it wasn't charging. I have cleaned all battery connections. Now again, after fully cooling down, over night, the alternator is working. I have picked up a new alternator for $200 but don't want to use it if that's not the problem or if there is a simple fix for the one I have.

BEFORE you install the new alternator take your truck to an auto electric shop or possibly a big box auto parts store & ask them to check your battery and charging system.
Please, No offense but I certainly wouldn't recommend removing battery cables with the engine running on any late model vehicle.
Have your truck professionally diagnosed.
