Well, my wife was driving my truck a few years ago and the fan shroud decided to come unbolted and it somehow found a way to fit while exiting the vehicle, lol. It did take some damage on the way out, but was overall in one piece (especially considering it was fighting with an angry moving fan), so I figured there had to be a way to get it back in when I installed the new one. It has been a while, so I don't remember the specifics, but I do remember that it was not all that hard but it took some head scratching.

might be able to work the shroud down from the top after removing the top hose from the radiator, otherwise yes the fan will have to come off.
years of dirt circle track racing experience and trying to keep the engine cool, you want the fan blades approximately half the way into the shroud opening for optimum cooling (extreme racing conditions)
