2002 Excursion V-10 Cranks Won’t Start
I have a 2002, V-10, 165k miles. This past winter, Louisiana, on cold mornings here (mid 30’s), I’d have the occasional cranks but wouldn’t start problem. Some days fire right up. Rare occasion, I’d have to spray starter fluid, and fire right up. I replaced the battery and checked all the cables. Seemed to help, but happened again. I let it get down to 1/8 tank, and I added the Techron (sp?) gas additive. I also cleaned the PCV valve, which had a slight residue. Left the MAF valve alone, but may have also inadvertently sprayed it, on the occasions with the starter fluid, not knowingly. I have no idea, but haven’t had a problem since. Any clues to what I did? Don’t know…Just sharing, but I swear it had something to do with the combo of the Techron additive and cleaning the PCV valve?
There should be a fuel pressure test port on the passenger side of the fuel rail.
Harbor Freight carries a reasonably priced gauge.
If the fuel pressure is good the Crank Position Sensor may be bad, the PCM looks for an input from the CPS to turn on the fuel pump to run the engine.
The fuel pump should get turned on for a few seconds when the key is first turned to Run or Start to prime the fuel rail. (12v on Inertia Switch PK/BK wire that goes to the fuel pump.)
The PCM will then enable the fuel pump relay to turn on the fuel pump when all conditions are met to run the engine.
Also, the IAC valve may be sticking closed, it controls the air entering the throttle body at idle,
It is not easily replaced, the board would need to be removed and a new relay could be soldered in.
A new higher rated external relay can be wired in, there are several threads on this forum with different approaches.
Our fuel pump at 140K became intermittent when towing, no problems since being replaced.
