quieter mufflers

I recently sold my 2011 f250 because it was getting rusty, I only put 20000 miles on in 5 years, and Started using a compact tractor with a front blower for snow removal rather then the truck and plow. Now my 73 is going to be doing all the light truck duties for me during the summer, and the more I use it the more I would like to tone the exhaust down. I currently have long tubes dual 2.25 exhaust with h pipe with a magnapac resinator and a flowmaster dual chanber on each side. Im looking for something with some sound and tone but much milder and no drone. Any ideas, maybe Im just getting old ?

Not getting old at all.

I just did 2 1/4" off the manifolds into a Y-pipe, 3" out of the Y into a single Dynomax Super Turbo, exiting in stock location behind the rear wheel. This is on my bronco and it has greatly reduced cabin noise. It sounds good outside the Bronco, but I can still let it warm up in the driveway at 5:00am without waking the neighbors. I'm super pleased. I cant speak much on the highway running because the weather stripping is shot, but the exhaust is not bothersome anymore.

I went with magnaflows, not as droney as the flow masters. They are a little loud but I dont think it's too bad, they get louder when you open it up.
walkers may be quieter.

How are the tailpipes exiting? If they point down towards the ground at all, even at a 45deg, it's going to make it sound much louder and make any drone more noticeable. Straight out the side is better and out the back is always the quietest in the cab. Packed mufflers will be quieter than chambered and usually drone less. The placement of the resonators and mufflers in the system also make a difference, sometimes just changing their position in the system a couple inches can make a difference. I kinda remember reading an article once about resonator distance from the muffler being important.

I'd probably try throwing a set of short straight glasspacks into the system, or replace the resonators with actual mufflers.

My buddy had Magnaflows on his Dodge at one point, they were fairly quiet at idle and light throttle, but when you got into it they had a pretty aggressive sound to them.

OEM mustang mufflers are pretty quiet and always cheap when guys remove them. They are also stainless.

I just installed some of these. Haven't run truck yet I'll post back in a few days.

Currently running 400 with hedman fender exit headers, about 4-5 foot exhaust and a flow master hushpower muffler/resonator.

It was a little loud at higher rpm for me....and traffic around me.

I use truck as tow rig for 23 foot boat. The exhaust got really loud over 3500rpm while towing (imagine slow climbing Rpms so the loud loud sound just kinda hung there until gear change up to 5000 where I shift.

They are designed according to the box to muffle open headers to make the street legal. And to meet nhra noise requirements in certain classes of racing.

Might be a huge power killer. I'll find out soon and report back

Just use 4 turbo mufflers, two on each side. I run them (just one each side) on my '77.

On my '07 with ss cat back, it had one 14" long 3" single in / 2.5" dual out chambered type muffler, it was too loud ... so I added a ss 28" long with 3" core Cherrybomb glasspack in the 3" in pipe, very nice mellow not loud at all sounds.

mine exit behind the rear wheels angled back. I had a 1 inlet dual outlet magnaflow on my superduty for a few year until the tail pipes rusted out and it sounded good. Room for muffles is limited do to the h pipe and 4 inch drive shaft being between the frame rails the whole way so i thin i could only fit a single muffler per side. the 12 inch resonator and flowmaster per side only just for for length reasons. thanks for the input so far

I thought the same thing in my 86, until I realized you can turn them sideways, derp lol and ended up having enough room.
So I have 2 magnaflows in the 86 but space is real tight now.

Hmmm quieter???? No those inserts were not at first.

I installed them with the 2 plugs welded on the ends.

It was very nasty choppy sounding in that configuration, sounded like a dragcar with blower surge. (I assume lean) AFR is currently inop.

With a drill I drilled out the solid plug on the end of the baffle. That got rid of the nastiness type sound and did mellow the sound down a little. I think the solid cap on the end caused too much restriction.

Only idle and few blips of the throttle. I have not drove the truck still waiting on a u joint.

Will update more once I can drive it and see what 5000rpm sounds like

Made a huge difference is overall sound.
No noticable power loss (have not towed yet)
Definitely changed the sound of the exhaust along with making the total volume lower.
