Ok, I am very confused on how to install the shifter linkage back in my truck. The Truck is a 1987 ford f150. 5.0, e40d, and 4wd. I bought the truck knowing that the engine had been pulled for a rebuild, and the guy said he had just never bothered putting all the 4wd stuff back in. I'm wondering if they didn't swap the transmission too? Here's how my shifter linkage looks, it looks to me the shifter linkage is set up to have the shifter handle in the location of an obs, but the linkage looks nothing like it. The hole in the floorboard is in the location of a bullnose truck. Here's what I found in a box labeled 4x4 parts.
Right, the 87s were indeed set up like a "bullnose" from the factory, with the t-case shifter coming in thru the top cover. Don't recall if 88s were done that way as well, but 89s were definitely using small opening on the side of the tunnel that carried into the OBS trucks.
That said, not only do you have the base of an 89-91 shifter bolted to the transmission, but that loose lever matches that design as well. Your best bet would be to just replace it with a proper bullnose shifter, so you can use the opening that's already there without having to cut a new one dedicated for the 89-91 shifter.
As far as the linkage goes, if it don't line up how you want it just make your own bar out of 1/4" flat stock, you can get new bushings from the parts stores. Or you can cut and weld two factory bars together to end up with whatever length gives you the lever positions you prefer.
Yup, that's absolutely the later "side mount" transfer case shifter. I don't have pictures of my '87 handy, but that's the linkage and shifter you need.
Ahh, I have worked on bullnose and obs fords before, I just didn't know what the bricknose used. So this is an 89-91 linkage. I like the idea of the side mounted shifter better too be honest, mainly because I might build a custom console for this truck and the shifter would be in the way if I wanted to make it full length. I don't think it would be too hard to cut another hole, plus the carpet is from a newer truck with that hole for the side mounted shifter so I wouldn't have to deal with the random hole in the carpet if I went that route.
No e4od from the factory in ‘87. That transmission didn’t come out until ‘89 which is probably why you have the wrong linkage. Did the PO wire up the OD cancel switch and install it in the dash? You’d also need the wire harness and a different PCM to operate it. Since ‘87 is an oddball year with one year only parts for that body style you might be better off relocating the hole in the floor and using later model parts.
