zf5 shifter

On my zf5 that I installed, the shifter seems to travel farther forward from the neutral gate than it does rearward.
Bought the tranny second hand, and the shifter he gave me to go with it was not attached, just sitting on a shelf.
Any possibility I got the wrong shifter, or damaged shifter, or is there another problem that I haven't considered?
The reason I'm asking (to clarify), the forward throws almost seem to over-travel, while the rearward throws have to be insured that it is actually in gear before applying power.

Is the shifter hitting the hole in the floor when moving to the rear? As far as forward travel, if there isn't a bunch of play in the shifter, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Sorry took so long to get back.
No, I checked it again, and the shifter is not hitting the hole in the floor plate. In fact, the shift tower sticks up above the plate just a tad, so the shifter itself couldn't touch if it wanted to.
