New to the group, hope I'm doing this right.
Ok, here we go. 95 F150 XL, 4.9 FI auto. Std. cab. 130K miles. Volt gauge started dropping to battery voltage, alternator. Original in the truck, replaced it. didn't work, had it checked, alternator OK. Reinstalled, worked. until it didn't. Battery load tested fine. 12V plus. When alternator works, 14.7V. Truck starts and runs fine, as long as there is battery. Battery light in dash never did come on, shot, replaced, Still didn't come on. Checked every fuse I could find, wires look good. Sometimes it works, sometimes not, sometimes it will work, then slowly quit after a few minutes. No other problems or modifications before all this started. What am I missing? I'm a shade tree mechanic, this is over my head. any help appreciated.
Have you checked the voltage at the battery with the truck running when you say the gauge drops to battery voltage? I am asking are you sure the volt meter is reading correctly?
Verify there is power on the Light Green/Red (LG/R) wire when the key is in the Run or Start position. That is the circuit that turns the alternator "On".
