transfer case vent tube leak?

Hi Dan and welcome to FTE
Could the oil be coming out of the front diff vent hose? Maybe follow the tube back and see exactly where it comes from. The transfer case vent hose should be on top of the transmission.
Later in 1997 Ford came out with an updated front axle tube with a relocated breather port location to stop the oil from coming out the vent. This picture shows the difference so you can see which one you have. If you decide to replace your tube the front diff has to come out. It's not a really big job but might be more than you're willing to tackle. Ford warranty paid 2 hours to do the job so realistically it probably takes about 3 hours.
The end of the tube is supposed to be open at the top.
