Hey guys I’m new to the Ford truck scene, so I have a 1970 Highboy that I’m rebuilding for my 14 year old daughter and I have a few transmission questions. So when I bought the truck back last summer it came with, which is not the correct engine according to the VIN. It came with a 460 back behind 4-speed trans with and divorced Dana 24 transfer case which I would love to keep the transfer case. To make easier for my daughter to drive I would like to put a automatic transmission in place of the 4-speed. I have received a donor 360 stroked to a 390 with a C6 trans that came out of my father-in-law’s 76’ F-100 Ranger, so my question is, is there any way to use that combination with the divorced Dana 24 or what are my options. TIA
The 460 and the 390 have different bell housings, a 400M bell housing works with a 460 block. Once you get the right tranny only the mount and the drive shaft length should change. I do believe.
Easy since it probably came with a 360 originally. Just find the original 4wd 240/300/360 engine supports out to 1976. You can use a 2wd C-6, but the problem is that the TC shifter mounts to the tail shaft of the NP 435, so the auto would mount the same way. A 2wd C-6 doesn't have the mounting points for the shifter unless you build something for it, or find a 4wd C-6.

sorry my bad I failed to to put in my original post the 360 C6 did come out of 4x4
Besides needing engine towers for the motor mounts, you will be needing another steering column. Now, I have never done any swap like this but I also thought I have read that you have to cut the rag joint off the A/T steering column and weld a u-joint on for the 4x4 steering shaft. You will also have to do something with the clutch/brake pedal assembly. Not sure if you can just remove the clutch pedal or if you need a different assembly. You might need a little drive shaft work on the intermediate shaft but since it came out of a 4x4, it might just all bolt in. The last thing I can think of is some exhaust work. Good luck on the truck and post up some pictures of it.
A 2wd auto column uses a rag joint but a dent 4wd auto column does not. The F-100 C-6 can't used as it is equipped for a married NP 205 TC whereas the F-250 had divorced TC's until 1976. Actually need a dent 4wd F-250 divorced C-6 for the tail shaft TC shifter mount, or use a 2wd one and fab a shifter mount. Easiest would be to dump the Dana 24 and use a married 205 TC with the F-100 C-6.
I would teach her to drive the manual trans and after a year or so you can swap in the auto.
Once she knows how to drive the manual she can drive anything and show up the boys that she can drive a stick when they cant!
My dad said each one of us kids, 4 of us, had to take our driving test in a manual. Mine was a 68 Dodge van, 3 on the tree, with a stand up camper top.

Thanks for the information, I have been following your build it’s coming along nicely just wished I had the weather you have. Not here in NE Arkansas lol here are a few pictures. Day I picked her up
Body looks good. Looks like maybe some floor pans and cab mounts for sure. Is the core support fixable? How involved of a rebuild are you planning? On my 72, I wasnt planning a full resto originally. Not sure how I ended up there. And thx, its getting there slower than I figured.
Thats what happened to me on my cab off. Any news and updates on the truck?
here are a few updated pictures, plans for the weekend is to get from the cab back cleaned up and refreshed, start on the rebuild on the Dana 60 Helper lol
