I’ve been chasing a bad clunking noise in my truck for a while and having already put a few transmission mounts in before I’m thinking I’ve broken another one.
The truck is 97 extend cab, 7.3, 250/100/s366 ( makes quite a bit more than stock power) has a zf5 4x4 with a south bend dual disk clutch(650hp), a custom single piece aluminum driveshaft, and a rear grizzly locker.
Even with traction bars the truck still seem to have a lot of axle wrap/ torque twist going on.
I ordered a solid style mount from auto fab, which is a two piece deal with a poly bushing around a bolt that connects either pieces.
Has anyone ran one of these before? Or a solid transmission mount? I am running brand new rubber stock style motor mounts. Should I be worried about damaging anything running a solid trans mount on the street?
I’m using sky off road traction bars. I like them but when I tried ordering new hiem joints from them they sent ones that were two short, and told me they never used anything longer and to buy them somewhere else.
im obviously concerned something like cracking the trans case, but this mount seems to have a little play and I’m hoping it’s be okay especially since the trans will still have the play of motor mounts
Well I’m hoping this is the last weak link, and a mount like this will hold down the transmission without stressing other components to the point of failure.
The rubber mounts that I can only find are probably from china. I called ford months back and ask them about motor mounts and they laughed when I told them how old the truck was.
these Trucks don’t seem that old to me but parts are getting harder to find even with the internet at our fingers
If something does break due to the mount, I’ll surely post on this thread for the next fellow
I had a bad clunking noise that turned out to be caused by old body mounts. Is it possible that your trans mount isn't the problem? I have seen too many posts mentioning broken ZF housings and I sure would not run that stiff mount, I'd live with the clunking noise first. I hate Chinese parts but they may still be a lot better than what your are running now and new motor mounts may take enough flex out of the system to make a difference.
Body mounts are tight, and motor motors are only a couple months old, I’ve been through every nut and bolt on this truck, I know the clunk is drive train related.
Honestly think the noise is from my driveshaft bottoming out in the t case, when the drive train moves due too a weak or broken trans mount.
Are you sure that the custom aluminum driveshaft isn't a little bit too long, causing it to bottom out under acceleration when the rear springs sag and the driveshaft angle is straight? Just asking this as I know that measuring and communicating driveshaft length to a shop can get confusing. And, the counter guy has to translate it again to the machinist.
Yes the driveshaft being too long definitely cross my mind but doing some research I learn that when the drive shaft is bottomed out in the transmission you should have 3/4” of room in between the u joints and yoke which is what I have.
i Did get the the new solid style trans mount installed this weeken, and it is quite a difference. It really tighted up drivetrain slack, the truck takes off from a stop smoother and is really smoother in every situation. There is a little more vibration when I really lay into it but nothing unbearable. The mount had a a lot more polyurethane than I imaged and after talking to John over at auto fab I’m not worried about damaging anything with this mount. Very happy
