Tailgate plastic ‘cowling’

I did a search for this about two years ago and found nothing other than OEM. I replaced mine twice and they are not that expensive, but I agree it should be better than plastic. Perhaps you could buy some aluminum stock and make your own?

That is a pretty large complex piece of plastic. I suspect a metal full replacement would be crazy expensive. I am considering just a 2x2 diamond plate angle over the inside edge. That would solve most of my damage issues and should be easy to source and fit.

Dee Zee used to make a tailgate cap, but now I’ll I’ve found is the full tailgate protector. It doesn’t look like they make just the cap anymore. Maybe some stores have some old stock lying around.

All I can say is what a piece of ****...the one piece that probably gets the hardest workout as far as trim and that's what they came up with...
