I'm looking for a F-150 for my daughter. It will be a light duty truck, not much hauling. Upwards of $15k, 4x4, crew or extended cab. Trying to stick under 150k miles too. With all those requirements everything I'm finding is 2012 or older. I was thinking of 2009 or newer for the 6 speed and slightly better fuel mileage. I heard 09 was the first year for the 6 speed and the transmission got better in following years, is this correct?
Wondering if anyone had any input on what to look for, engine options and such. 5.4s are of course the most common. How about the 6 cylinders? My biggest concern with those is a turbo ads more parts which is more stuff to break on an older vehicle. I did just find a super clean 2011 with the 5.0 for $13k but at 165k miles it's a little higher than I wanted
Very few 13's or newer come up within my price range, it's almost all 2010's. Looking through my saved list, I see a 13 with a 3.5 at 145k, a 5.0 at 150k with cab corner rust and a 5.0 13 at 135k that has some ****ty looking mods which is usually not a good sign
You might want to look at the 3.7L. It will be the cheapest to buy and maintain. I bought mine new in 14 and have been happy, the amount of power is surprising. As far as rust, I had a friend that found a Texas dealer that arranged his flight in, picked him up at the airport, and he made it back to Indiana all in one day. Finding anything 10 years old in the Midwest not at least stating to rust is tough. Good luck
I've seen one 3.7 in my search so far, I'll see if I can find it again. And yeah the rust thing is huge here. It's possible to stay rust free but you have to stay on top of it.

That's the reality of buying used anything right now, prices are sky high with no end in sight. I looked up fair market value on my 9 yo truck and it's almost as much as what I drove it off the lot for back in 13, (paid $29,900 otd). Granted I only have 25k miles on it so a lot of the value isn't eat up by mileage.
In my opinion prices are starting to come down so if I wait I should see more options. I'm basing this off of in my search, dealer prices are now lower than private party prices for used F-150's. So I think all the private sellers still have dollar signs in their eyes while the dealers understand the actual market a little better. So yeah prices still high but I think we're past the peak.

That might be the case for most vehicles but Ford trucks tend to hold their value. Back in 13 when I was checking the used lot at my local dealer, the prices of 1 yo trucks with close to 36k miles on them were only 2k less than a new truck.
I went there with buying a low mileage used truck in mind until I saw the price difference, it made 0 sense buying used at that time.

This was also my experience in 2011.
I have to give a +1 shout out for a 3.7L truck. That's plenty of engine for light duty truck stuff and the 3.7L isn't clogging these boards with reliability issues.

True that, we have a service van Transit 250 with that 3.7. It has well over 150,000 miles on it with mostly only basic maintenance done to it, still running original plugs.
That van stays loaded down all the time with parts, tools, equipment to make it a mobile work shop.
Also my dealer price theory might be wrong. Starting checking the carfaxes and the dealers are bringing in TONS of vehicles from Canada. There's one dealer in particular that seems to be bringing in semi loads of them. I was wondering why this one dealer had way more trucks than everyone else. Then noticed all the trucks said XTR on the bed which is apparently a Canadian trim line.

if you decide on a 5.4 or 4.6,
The best years without issues are 09/10
as long as they had regular oil changes.
The only issue I've encountered is the broken exhaust stud on passenger side but quittens down after 30 sec.

Check out the farm auctions. I bought my 2013 xl reg cab 4x4 3.7l at a local farm auction with 41,000 miles on it. It was a one owner, the elderly farmer who used it for his farm truck. I've had it for a little over 2 years now...it has been an incredible truck. Last year I drove it all over the western US, then back to Cody Wyo. this last spring and down to Texas over Labor day. I have 63,000 on it now. Won the bid at $17k which seemed steep at the time but seeing what used truck are going for now with higher mileage it was a good purchase.
I second what Speckman said above. The 5.4 with the 6R80 is a great combo. It's a real shame it was only for two years. My 09 has been relatively trouble free aside from wear and tear, no complaints at all. I wouldn't say the 5.0 is much better than a 09/10 5.4, early 5.0s had their trouble too. As long as the 5.4 got its oil changed on time, it should be fine; as stated above. If your daughter isn't towing much, I would lean towards the 5.0 as I think they can get a little better fuel economy.
In case you haven't heard, the trans lines for the 6R80 have been known to snap off as these trucks get older and miled out. I did mine for peace of mind, but I got 300K km on the clock.
