I need to get a fuel pump for my 1996 l6. It's for the front tank. I'm looking at pumps on rock auto and they say that they are for plastic tanks. My tank is steel does it matter? Thanks in advance.

I wouldnt take a chance on it being a wrong pump. I am running one of these in the front of my 95 with the larger front tank. Working good so far. cheap to replace if it takes a dump. shows as for a front tank, OR a plastic rear. Steel rear tank has a differently shaped plastic housing than the front tanks
ULTRA-POWER E2059MN {Click Info Button for Alternate/OEM Part Numbers} Electric Pump; Includes Pump, Reservoir, Strainer, and Seal; Strainer included w/ Pump Info
INCL STRAINER w/ PUMP; CENTER TANK OR 19 GAL REAR PLASTIC TANK

perfect thx, that's the exact one I was going to get 👍👍👍
how long have you had the Pump? Some ppl are telling me not to buy cheap pumps. I can't afford it tho.
had the truck about a month and a half. Pump was installed about 3 weeks ago. Cheap pumps are a bit of a crapshoot, but when its all you can do, its all you can do. In the grand scheme of things, they arent THAT hard to change out if it craps out on you...... (as long as the tank is relatively empty that is....)
for full disclosure, this is the second pump I put in that tank. First one came with the truck, and was replaced due to a plugged internal sock filter (there is the outside one you put on when you install it, there is another much finer one inside the plastic housing directly attached to the pump pickup).
do yourself a HUGE favor and make sure the tank is CLEAN inside before buttoning it up. I learned this the HARD WAY.....if there is fine rust/sediment in there it WILL plug the pickup and cause low flow/pressure issues.

I'll second those folks. I cheaped out replacing my pumps, ended up having to re-do my front tank. It crapped the bed on Interstate 81 - thankfully I was able to coast, switch tanks, and get the truck running again.
Spend a little bit to get a quality pump and don't worry about it again.
