Well guys my 2wd has one. So nothing to do with 4x4.
My guess is it has something to do with assembly. The frames and suspensions are assembled upside down, then uprighted just before the engine and transmission arrive. I think it's used in handling the frame during assembly. I have had several cars that still had the lift points attached to the engines at delivery so that sort of thing happens.
