On my 1999 F350 in my signature I have removed a "can" looking device temporarily to install some additional wiring. Located in the location of the drivers side battery on a diesel truck but on a gas truck it's next to the air filter of a V10. There is a hose connected to the can and it goes about 12" to a steel line running down the left frame rail towards the rear of truck.
Keeps fumes and evaporation in check. You will have a vacuum leak and CEL for the fuel tank if you don't somehow convince the computer that it's still there.
Harmless to performance, might even save you .25 per tank in evap costs.
