PLEASE NO OIL DEBATE

Hi.
I have a question that I've never seen asked, and PLEASE do not start pushing amsoil or any other oil. My question is this. I get some great discount coupons from the local Ford dealer for full service oil change on my 22 F350. But it is ALWAYS with Synthetic Blend. I don't really mind as this is what ford uses in their truck out of factory. What I'm wondering is does the onboard computer consider the "TYPE" of oil you use to compute time till oil change, or is it strictly based on miles. Haven't been able to find a good knowledgeable answer on this. Thanks in advance for keeping on topic.

If you have the diesel I do not believe the standard fill oil is a synthetic blend. The Motorcraft diesel oil jug says nothing about being a blend. Also, I highly doubt the IOLM is intelligent enough to know what type of oil is being used. It's an algorithm.

This is old but I don't think much if anything has changed.

The truck uses load, temperature, idle time, and several other parameters to decide when to change the oil.
The quality of the base stock is not considered becase the oil additive depletion, fuel contamination, and general contamination is what is used to determine when to change engine oil, not the oil base stock condition.

The IOLM uses time, miles and load. It calculates based on load. If you just drove it on the highway everyday for long stretches, it takes that into consideration, extending out to the max limit, but if you tow heavy everyday it uses that to shorten the time/miles driven to change it sooner. It also bases change on time since last reset and will prompt after a year to have it changed if seldom driven.

However it does not care what type of oil is used, just on how the engine is used. It is the same if gas or diesel, with the interval programmed manufacturer settings, so if the gas is a 10K interval it will be 10K, if 7500 mile, then it will use that setting

The 6.7 Powerstroke is filled with Ford brand synthetic blend at the factory. This is also their recommended oil for oil changes.

Pretty sure the factory fill for the 6.7 is 10w-30 non synth. That is perfect for break-in. You don't want to run a synth oil until you know the rings are seated or you'll have blow by.

Regardless, the PCM has no idea what type of oil is used. It's up to you to decide what oil to put in, and what the change interval should be. Synth blend is fine, just don't run it as long as full synth.

Please provide some facts to back that claim. Nowhere in my manual does Ford say "synthetic blend" in reference to the 6.7l. The recommended Motorcraft oil (10w30) for normal operation also does not state anywhere that it is a synthetic blend. Their Synthetic diesel oil clearly says "Synthetic".

That's what I was thinking also.. I wonder if ford took all this into consideration when they decided to recommend synthetic Blend oil. And thank you for an "ON TOPIC" response. Always hate asking an oil question, because it always brings out the "oil" fans boys.

Where do you see synthetic blend recommended for that engine.....

Isn't this the oil recommended for normal use? I don't see anything claiming to be synthetic blend...

I didn't see that anywhere, but that is what my dealer uses for their oil specials. I also checked with other dealers, and it's also what they use.

Oh ok, you said Ford recommends synthetic blend, so I thought you got that from somewhere. They do for the gas, but I have not found that to be true for the diesel.

Next time you're there, maybe you can find out what brand oil that is then. The Motorcraft gas engine oil is a syn blend, but the their diesel oil is not. So they must be using some other brand.
