2) Would it be very crazy to try to replace the broken window with a plexiglass sheet instead? I could probably take the shape from the passenger side and at least it would be less prone to be shattered and broken like that.
What do you guys think? Would love to know some reasons why this is a stupid idea and/or if anyone tried, etc..
Using any sort of "plastic" sheet whether Lexan (poly carbonate) or Lexan (acrylic) is NOT a good idea as it will become highly scratched in very short order. Since it moves up and down and rubs against the door run channels etc. You're welcome to try but cutting the right shape so the replacement piece fits correctly would be tough using the installed passenger side glass.
I'd suggest you call a local independent glass installer and get a quote on them doing the job completely or see if they'll sell you just the glass for DIY. Since I'm already in the auto/truck glass business I'd pretty never use an on-line glass seller due poor fitment and possible breakage while in transit.
Pretty easy to replace the glass
A junkyard window should be about 25 bucks
If I installed it for you it would be about 90 bucks
