Seat covers

Has anyone found a supplier for decent quality saddle blanket bench seat covers? The one I got off Amazon is just a terrible 1 piece design that fits like ****. Has holes for headrests even though the ad said it didn't, the thing seems like it's too short on the back and it keeps getting pulled down exposing the black material they use on the back of the seat.

I got Saddleman brand long time ago for my split back bench. I mainly needed the bench portion but used the seat back cover on the driver's side. They fit decent. I made a few mods to the tie ups. That was about 15 or 20 years ago. Still liking it for what it is.

Here an older thread on seat cover for our Bullnose trucks. The OP had bucket seats in his rig but there are plenty of links to aftermarket providers that can get you what you need.

You are correct that LeBaron Bonney doesn't exist anymore. However, Wet Okole and Carhartt still make slip-on style seat covers. You can also get hog ring style seat covers from LMC, Kanter and Automotive Interiors. SMS and Legendary still make OE fabric if you're doing a concours restoration.

I hate the one piece covers. As soon as you fold the seat forward the seat belts pull through the holes.

Thing is I'm specifically looking for the saddle blanket style and cathartcarhartt and wet okole don't make one like that.

I've had mine for almost 20 years. I had an upolstery shop remove the original bench cover, remove the top layer of dead foam, glue in a couple of inches of new foam, reinforce the original cover to make it stronger. Then I put the saddleman cover on the bench. Nice fit and has held up very well. As I mentioned only used the driver's side seat back. I got the split seat option for the supercab. The passenger side was perfect so didn't use the other side. Saving it till needed. So yeah I have em and am happy.

I saw the price $260 now for the split back. Back when I got mine it was about half that price. You'd be gettin the build back better price adjustment today.

One thing I really like about the saddle blanket material besides being tough and long lasting (so far outlasting the original seat cover by twice) is the elimination of the "hot seat". When your truck has been parked in the sun with the windows closed you can jump right in the seat without worry of scorching your backside. With the original vinyl seat cover you had to be careful especially if wearing shorts.

How bad is the existing upholstery? Is the seatback chewed up, or just the bottom?

On my supercab, the seatback was fine. Only the bottom was in need of some love. I priced seat covers and was not impressed. I went cheap and easy (story of my life and proud of it!) with a Mexican blanket across the bottom. Perfect? No, but thoroughly adequate:

Lots of colors from which to choose. The light brown looks pretty decent with the tan interior of my truck. I just tuck in the back edge and the rest stays put fairly well. Easy to wash, too, as it is simple to remove and throw in the washing machine. I've had this blanket almost 5 years now and am very pleased with it.

As a bonus, this blanket feels much softer than the stock seat covers. Not a big deal when I'm wearing pants, such as for a court appearance, but it's much appreciated the rest of the time.

If you are not worried about the old cover underneath, I have found hot melt glue works great to fasten a blanket or cheap seat cover that likes to slide around. That hot melt glue runs into the fibers of both fabrics and holds well and is easy to apply. Just press and hold till it cools off.

When I got mine it was from an auto parts store in a box from stock. So back then they were mass producing them. It does appear that now they making them to order. That's going to add cost. It may be something you can get from a store if you can find one NOS. I remember thinking 100 plus bucks was a lot too. I had already bought one for my Chevy Truck 20 years before so it was my second one. That first cover was more like 50 bucks. But that was 40 years ago. So every 20 years prices double. The price isn't likely coming down in another 20 years.
