I currently own a 93 Ford Explorer. Recently I noticed that when I pull back the switch to flash my bright lights, they don't work. When you push the switch forward, to keep the brights on, you get the same result. When the headlights are on low, and you pull the switch backwards for bright lights, the lights shut off completely. The parking lamps stay lit. The same is true if the lights are on and you push the switch forward. The lights go out and the brights do not come on. I have tried replacing the bulbs but that did not alleviate the problem. The bright indicator on the dash lights up like the lights are working, but the bright lights do not come on. Are there any fuses that need to be checked? If so where are they located? I have checked the fuses up under the steering column and everything tests okay with a fuse tester.
check the wiring diagram for a lamp out module, or you,ll have to replace the multifunction switch. in either case its about $50.00
i changed the switch first and it didnt work, then i did the lampout module and that did it. this was for a 95 eb explorer.
The fisrt generation explorers did not have a lights out module. I'll dig up the wireing diagram tomorw and post it for you. Sorry, but it's past time for me to hit the sack.
Are you having any other problems with turn signals, four way flashers, windshield wipers or windshield washer? If so, then it's your multi-function switch. Even if you don't it could still be the switch. Try cleaning it first by spraying electric contact cleaner into the four way flasher switch while repeatedly pushing it on and off. Can't hurt and might be a quick, cheap fix.
