I’ve been looking everywhere for someone who can give me some guidance on my 2017 F250 king ranch 6.7. Approximately 120,000 miles on it. About a year ago I was coming home from work and smelled diesel. My fuel filter under the hood was spraying the diesel out of the top of the filter. I replaced the filters without any problem and the leak stopped. The next morning on the way to work, I ran out of fuel unexpectedly. My gauge was reading about a half a tank. Ever since I changed my filter that time, my gauge will not go to full when I refuel and it is not accurate. It bounces around at times and shows empty when I still have plenty in the tank. One diesel mechanic said probably my sending unit. I’ve changed filters since that time without any improvement. I don’t want to drop to cash on a sending unit because it didn’t start until the filter change. Just wondering if anyone else has seen this or has any ideas on how to fix this.
You may want to consider getting your truck looked at. A lot of rv forums I read one person had a 17-19 diesel that burnt to the ground and the camper as well. Investigators found it was caused by what you had happen with diesel spraying under the hood from fuel filter.

That is from the engine bay mounted fuel filter sometimes cracking or getting a hole in the plastic that sprays fuel. That was observed by the OP and fixed by replacing the fuel filter. Nothing to get checked out in regards to that. His existing issue may need some diagnosis by a technician but is not a fire concern.

Thanks for the replies. I guess I’m going to start with the sending unit and go from there. That’s the only thing I can think that would cause the problem. Just weird it happened all when I replaced the filters. Thanks again
When you changed the lower filter, was there any crud on it? That would be an indicator of algae. I don't know if algae would cause the sending unit/float to misbehave. But if a significant amount of algae accumulates on the float, maybe it could weigh it down?
