Transmission Filter Torque

I'm not sure it matters, but maybe it does...

I've got a 1979 C6 I'm about to put in my F-250. I've replaced the filter, and the part manufacture gave torque values for the pan 80 then 120, but not the filter. Is there a required torque value for the transmission filter or do I just use 18-20 lbs so it's good and snug?

While I'm at it, one filter bolt was longer than the others. I remember the same on the C6 I'm replacing, so where does it go?

Thanks!

Hi,

The longer filter screw goes on the right (passenger side) rear corner of the filter. Use a nut driver rather than a socket wrench, and tighten the filter screws snugly, using one hand on the nut driver only. Don't play he-man with them! You don't want to distort the valve body casting by overtightening. The clearances on the valves within are very tight, distortion can cause one or more valves to stick.

That 80 and 120 for the pan, that is INCH-pounds, right?!?!

Torque the filter bolts 40 to 60 inch pounds and the pan 12 to 16 foot pounds if it is a factory steel type..If you have the valve body removed from the case torque it to 95 to 125 inch pounds..These numbers are out the 1972 Ford Overhaul manual for the C6..I have found it best to use 12 foot pounds for the pan..Retorque after warm up..

Torky2 I appreciate your reply. I put the bolt where you said to. From truck's front: passenger side, last spot toward tail of transmission, so that's left rear.

Yeah, that's inch-lbs! I was surprised too, but haven't done alot of torquing and had no reason otherwise to dispute the values. I have a posting from somewhere here listing torque values for the engine, but I'm pretty sure it didn't provide the filter values, that's why I asked.

Metro2, big thanks for your providing these torque values.

I'm glad I asked before proceeding... guess that's what these forums are all about... kept a novice like (me) from overtorquing and damaging my transmission internals ... that's a big plus.

Wonder why the part manufacturer cited values so high? Both of the gaskets are cork... does that make a difference?

Torque units inches vs foot lbs!!!

My torque wrench reads only in ft-lbs and n-m. I didn't pick up on the units of inch-lbs and yes, dadblameitsnolongermuchfun I snapped two screws.

About gave up but wife had my truck so I couldn't take the tranny to the shop to fix. So after calming down, I carefully took the valve body off to get at the bolt pieces. Got 'em!

Now, having trouble with the valve body, primarily linkage. Help, how do the two linkages fit on the valve?
