Toyouta question(sorry)

Maybe somebody here knows. My daughter has an 04 RAV4 and the other day it was shifting harshly. The interweb says that 01-05 can have computer issues that can damage the tranny after a while. All recalls and extended warranties are long over.

She took it to Toyo and it didn't scan any codes( they often don't I guess) and didn't act up during the quick test drive. They refused to quote the cost of a new compute.

There are some companies that will send you a rebuilt computer if you give them your VIN -- I checked one with the BBB and they seemed legit. They can apparently program them if they have the VIN -- or so they say. The compute is in the back of the glove box and looks fairly easy to access.

Anybody have any experience with this?
Thanks,

hj
