92 f150 5.8l, removed fuel injection for carb, running duraspark dizzy with hei ignition module and stock coil from the 92
set initial timing (anywhere 8 - 12) starts and idles fine but when try to drive bucks and sputters as soon as i let out the clutch
noticed when i rev from idle timing retards abut 10 degrees then jumps over 30 advanced
have 2 distributors and does same thing with both
Since you did a carb conversion I'm not sure if this applies to your current set up. On the original fuel injection you had you remove the SPOUT plug and it removes the computer to set the base timing. When you plug the SPOUT back in the computer takes over timing and adjust based on preset programs. If you didn't remove the SPOUT what you are seeing would be normal.
I have no idea what would compel you to remove the EFI for a carburetor. I wouldn’t convert to carb any more than I would convert my carbureted trucks to EFI. Having said that what is your vacuum source for advance? Are you saying the timing drops from ~ 10° BTDC to 0° and then goes to 30°? Are they the same distributor or different? Are the advance weights and springs the same for both or are they set differently?
15 years as a member and your first posts are about timing problems on a carburetor conversion?
If your advance vacuum is from the manifold, what you are getting is probably correct. If that's what you have, move the advance to carb ported vacuum and see if that helps., Be sure to plug off the vacuum line when setting the timing whatever type advance you have.
I have my reasons. vac advance is not involved (not hooked up) because it amplifies the issue under any load, until i can get this figured out it will stay off then ported vac. yes timing goes from ~10 BTDC to 0-5 ATDC then ~30 BTDC. one dist is a new from napa other is a reman (better/ tighter) springs and weights appear to be the same (new has no markings)
ok timing chain was loose enough to cause problems, but the real issue was i had the two wires from the ignition module to the distributor swapped (oops)
