Are they the same? Auto vs 4spd. Im guessing this one was modified by cutting off the area around the starter. I have another plate but it's from a auto...just want to confirm so I don't waste my time. TIA This is the other one. Can't figure out why the PO trimmed it.
400, 351M, 429, and 460 all use the same mid plates. The difference between manual and automatic transmission mid plates, is where the starter is located. Manual transmission has the starter farther outboard than where the automatic transmission locates the starter.
Thank you all for the info...I think I figured out why it was trimmed. Trans was swapped out for a T19 and I'm guessing they didn't know that the motor plates were different so instead of tearing it apart...they just cut it. I'm glad I asked...I didn't know they were different.
I'm going to order one from Jeff's Bronco.
Do I need a different starter?
Yeah, trimming the plate so the starter will clear is definitely not the answer. The plate does more than position the starter, it also supports, spaces, and aligns the starter. With that big notch cut out, the starter will be off axis once the two bolts are torqued down. At the very least, that would cause the starter to misalign with, and chew up the ring gear.
