I prefer more colorful descriptives in real life. I exercise restraint, so as not to offend polite society. Jim is a church-going man. He may not appreciate that sort of vernacular.
Some people just have no clue. Why would you burn a business just to steal from it? I notice he did not burn the East Bay Macy's. So it makes no sense.
$17,000,000 in merchandise lost. Nobody knows what the structural damage, clean-up, demolition, and new building will cost. It will take at least 6 months. Home Depot will still have to pay rent to the landlord, even though they lost 6 months worth of sales. I once heard that a busy Home Depot could ring up $1,000,000 a week in sales. Employees will be out of work for 6 months. The lucky ones will pick up some hours at other stores. Truck drivers will lose a stop on their route. Other businesses in that shopping center will be disrupted. Even the lady who sells tacos and churros from the trailer in front is going to be out of income until the store is rebuilt. There is a ripple effect in the local economy.
The accused will receive room & board, medical & dental, vocational training, and conjugal visits - at taxpayer expense.
As consumers, we pay for retail theft.
Insurance companies can't pay out claims in the tens of millions, without charging it back to policy holders.
You, and I, and our wallets, are the victims. We will be the ones who pay for it all. Maybe that guy will get beat up while he is in jail.
Unfortunately, or fortunately, crime and punishment is political. As a society, we vote. We vote to pass laws which are a part of our justice system. We vote for things like a death penalty. In California, we are also suppose have "3 Strikes". We are also a represented democracy. We elect representatives who are suppose to protect society. State Attorney General. District Attorney. Coroner. Sheriff. Depending on your perspective, it can be good or bad. Maybe it strikes a balance. In The Great State of California, the people have voted for, and kept in place, the death penalty. Our elected officials have not asked for the death penalty as sentencing for over a decade. And prior death penalty sentences have not been enforced for decades. The Governor has now ordered that "Death Row" at San Quentin Prison should be eliminated, as it serves no purpose.
It's quite the discussion for college classrooms. Maybe the young people of today, as they become the leaders of tomorrow, will have different ideas and take different courses of action. Somewhere along the way, the next generation may be able to balance crime, punishment, compassion for convicted people, and restorative justice. My generation did not do so well. Our justice system is full of fault, and every day there is a miscarriage of justice. Maybe the youth can learn from our mistakes.
Will Smith has a new best friend in Mike Tyson. Iron Mike took the spotlight off of Smith.
The question of the day, from someone in my real life social circle, was: Why are we watching a blurry cell phone video. Don't they have surveillance cameras on planes?
Since 9/11, do you think any airplane is flying without surveillance? The airliners and FAA do not release security footage to TMZ for sensationalism. Maybe in 10 years, someone could file a Freedom of Information Act request for the footage. I doubt it will be released.
