I drive a 1987 F250 4.9l 4spd, 3.55 gears. My problem is this morning when I went to start my truck it started as usual but when it was running it made a low hissing noise when at idle. Then when I got off from school I tried to start my truck, it started but it sounded like the battery was almost dead. On the way home I noticed that my battery guage dropped down to about 9 volts. When I got home I tried to start it again all I got was a grinding noise. Can somebody tell me what they think the noise is comming from and how to fix it?
I would suspect that the hissing noise might be a vaccuum leak somewhere. I can't imagine anything going wrong with the charging system to create a hissing sound unless the brushes went out of your alternator. My first recourse would be to have the truck jumped. The connect a DVOM across your terminals of your battery to get a voltage reading. If the reading is around 14v, you'll more than likely need a new batt. If it is less than that, remove the alternator and take it in to a shop to have it tested. It could either be the alternator or regulator. The regulator is internal on that alternator if I'm not mistaken with that year of truck.
I put a new battery in the truck but the alternator is still seeming like it is working really hard to keep a normal charge. Do you still think it is the Alternator?
It sounds to me like a bad battery. The hissing might be from a venting battery possibly from being overcharged. To see if the alternator is putting out remove the Pos cable from the bat after it is running. If it continues to run the alternator is charging. It sounds like you need to have both battery and alternator checked out. Most decent auto parts houses will do this free of charge.
