Hey everyone, I was driving back to AZ from TX a couple days ago, wrapping up the first trip of any significant distance I've made with the new-to-me truck. While driving through some areas with high gusts and lots of dust, twice I noticed my ABS light come on, and one of them I noticed the speedometer needle go a little crazy. It's possible the needle did this both times and I just didn't see it the way I was holding the wheel, I don't know. Both times, I was using cruise control, and both times my initial response was to gently press the brake pedal. And both times when I did this, it went away. The truck seemed to be running fine and I don't think I ever would have noticed anything if the light hadn't caught my attention.
Since this is my first diesel and since we're getting ready to put about 9,000 miles on it this summer, I thought I'd better ask to see if this is anything to be concerned about. Other than that (and an oil leak question for another post after I search the forums), I couldn't be happier with the truck. It ran great, got about 16mpg, never had any issues or concerns. Thanks!
Forgot to add- 2002 F350 diesel 4x4 crew cab with about 164,000 miles
Until the experts show up I’ll offer what I think to know…
The speedometer gets its reading from the VSS on the transmission sensor on rear diff. Might check the wiring heading there.
Edited for correction based on the smart fella’s following post.
My first thought also was the vehicle speed sensor on the rear differential. Should throw a code. Replaced mine not too long ago to fix a few issues. Wind seems like coincidence, but who knows!

Yes, you are correct. My mind slipped on me. Went back and edited my error above.
