Last week I was changing the belts on my truck (2016 Lariat 5.0) and noticed one of my tensioners was not "tensioning" anymore, so I replaced that as well. I also noticed that, while it was working fine, my upper idler pulley was extremely rusty as well as the bolt holding it in.
While shopping for a new pulley and bolt, I was made aware that there are actually 2 different versions of the idler pulley for these trucks / motors. Apparently a steel one and a plastic/nylon one. I'm pretty sure I have the steel one based on it's rusted appearance and after tapping it with a metal bar, and pretty sure based on my window sticker that my truck's build date is 3/10/16.
My question... am I able to "update" my pulley to the nylon one (which I believe is the pulley for trucks built "after 3/15/16"? I've seen some postings that one shouldn't replace a plastic pulley with a steel one, but can I replace a steel one with a nylon one?
