Looking for the part number or a resource to procure an 8 tooth drive gear for the NP205 in my 78 F150. It currently has a 7 tooth. Reason being is I just swapped to the lowest (16) tooth driven gear they make and my speedo is still off 5 MPH at 60. Going 60 reading 55ish. Thanks.
That appears to be for a 208 case. Not a 205. Looks like the 208 came in 80-89 trucks. Now if the 208 and 205 parts are interchangeable that would be great, but I have no idea if they do or not.

Well, it will be a while until I use that one in my 205, it's all in pieces on my bench and I may not switch tire sizes and need it in the end. But you can obviously search things on the internet to know that it's for a 208. Use those searching powers for positive instead of negative things! There are listings like this online that imply that the same drive gears work in both transfer cases. It looks like the part number I have is only about $30-$40 on ebay or other places you could buy one and find out by experience if you like adventure.
To me the best thing to say would have been ...hey this gear here fits, the 205/208 cases share the same drive gear and all would have been well. The reason I have no idea if they fit or not is because the only source that says they fit is the 1 guy on Ebay that sells them......every other thing I was able to dig up only mentions they fit the 208. So maybe spare us all the suspense, especially if you have a 205 in pieces, and maybe see if it actually fits. Then you can share your knowledge and we will all be wiser. If not ...hey that's OK too. I just wont throw away $30 for a piece of plastic that if it doesn't work will be of no use to me.....I'd rather spend the $30 on some lightning strips or curb feelers.
Thank you for the links. I found the Allsate gear but once again it does not say it fits a 205.....only a 208. Also their email is not going through, keeps getting returned undelivered. I also tried the number but it just rings and rings. I have a few inquiries out to some shops to see if a 208 and a 205 take the same gear but am not getting any replies. Not in a hurry but one day I would like to be going the speed I'm being told I'm going.......lol.

Hey guy are you ever going to let us know if it fits? Going back through my searches there are many inquiries into the drive gear on a NP205. Might come in handy for someone doing a search in the future.

I wasn't planning on it. It seems silly when there are multiple sites that say it fits that are findable with easy internet searches and my workbench is buried from the last -teens temperatures we had where I had to move a bunch of stuff to fit my wife's rig in the garage. I'm not sure I can reach the parts let alone find where they are. I grabbed the box for my earlier picture because it was near the end/edge where I could get to it.
Ok, I was able to get to them when I was out working on my Bronco seats today. As far as I can tell the two gears are the same. They both fit in the same place. The 8 tooth is slightly looser fitting, but that could be related to how gummy and dirty the 7 tooth one is.
Wonderful...thank you sir. I was only able to find 1 site that said that part # would fit a 205/208. This same guy, had the same part for sale at another site, only fitting a 208 and when I contacted him he said it would not fit a 205. I appreciate you finding out for us. Thank you very much.
While all this was going on I had an email into Greensales Company. Asking if D5TZ17285A would fit. They said some interesting things, if you are looking for a gear. They did ask for a picture of the tag on my 205. Here is their reply.
Hello,
We do not have the D5TZ17285A. The Ford microfiche does not say how many teeth it has. However they go by the NP435 and not the 205/208 half. According to the microfiche the NP435 sometimes uses the D5TZ17285A depending on the tire size and rear end ratio. So it is safe to say that the D5TZ17285A will work in the 1978 F150 with a NP435 as long as the teeth count and rotation are correct for your rear end ratio and tire size to get the correct speed listed on the speedometer.
Confusing huh.....at least to me it was.......so I replied, trying to understand the thought behind it:
This gear fits in the 205 but it is decided by the 435? That's sorta confusing...lol
They replied:
Hello,
When researching the correct part number in the original Ford microfiche it asks if it is a New Process 435, New Process 4/M/T, or New Process 542. And then from there you need to know what the correct rear axle ratio is, then from there you need to know what tire size. And that information is what it takes to properly research the drive and driven gear. No where does it ask about the NP205 or NP208. That leads me to believe that the NP205 and NP208 do not matter where as the NP435 does.
Thank you,
Joshua

Well, the 2 wheel drive transmissions have the speedo drive gear in the transmission and the 4x4 ones have it in the transfer case. It sounds like they were looking at references for 2 wheel drive setups. If you want part numbers for the gears this thread has references from Number Dummy for 2 wheel drive applications. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/7...rive-gear.html
As far as how many teeth to get, that is a relatively simple math problem for the computers and calculators we all have access to currently. I found this site to be accurate for me with my actual wheel size, rear end ratio, drive and driven gears checked against GPS. Ford Speedometer Calculator Be aware, to truly get an accurate number you should measure your tire from the ground to the middle of your hub and double that for the diameter instead of using the number that they sell the tires as.
