Another question on possible purchase of a 96 Explorer (XLT) 4x4 w/ 86,000 miles:
I spoke with a guy at a repair shop on these trucks and he mentioned that the Overhead cam model engines have a tendency to have problems, while the overhead valve is a better model to go with. I'm not sure which type the explorer that we're looking at is, but either way I'm curious of other people's experiences with these different engines. The explorer we're looking at is a v-6....
something you should consider is the horsepower, or lack of it 160 hp for the 4.0 in 96. you will notice when the A/C is on. i think the 97 4.0 has quite a bit more 205hp. i would look into that. i don't know where you live but there are a ton of low mileage explorers around here. take your time and search.
