The cameras on these trucks aren't known for their quality. Many have had to replace early under warranty. It's the front camera on mine that has been the worst.
Anyone have issues with their backup camera. Recently picked up this 2018 Lariat and the camera is horrible. Yes, I have cleaned it off.
I am about to replace the camera on my 2018 too for the same reason you described. I purchased it already, just waiting for the weather to be nicer. Also be warned there are several cameras you can purchase depending on your setup. Mine was between $200 and $300.

Are the newer trucks better quality? If so, do they just swap in? I just bought a 2015 Fiesta for a commuter and the backup camera on that thing blows my 2018 SD away! It's like the clearest backup camera ever...... Hell, I wonder if that camera swaps...... HMMMM
Wish there was a after market plug and play camera. Id change out the OE stuff if there was
I think there is one. I ordered a cap for my truck. This is the ARE cap with the door. As such, the tailgate goes. Part of the quote is that if you have a tailgate camera stock, they have to put one in. So I think there has to be a camera made unless they are reusing the camera which makes no sense.

I think he means a plug n play aftermarket camera that's a direct fit to the tailgate location. To replace the OEM camera. That is something a lot of owners would be interested in.

$399 including the necessary harness and programming...no thanks. I would stick with OEM in that case. Obviously not a direct replacement since it requires the handle assembly be swapped out too, unlike the OEM camera. But, it is an option for a truck with a manual tailgate and wants to try something different. Also, the guidelines don't function like OEM.
