I've got a '66 with FE 352. I'm looking at the FE cast iron headers is an effort to keep the truck period correct (as possible). I've seen there are some early '60s shorty cast iron headers and then some later 60s long tube headers. These are purported to fit the 390s and I'm assuming my 352 is the same as far as the exhaust bolt up is concerned. Am I correct that either the shorty or long tube 2 bolt (upper and lower) cast iron headers would bolt on to my 352?
I've see some discussion of these headers here on the form but the search didn't get me there.
Kugel Components makes them $750. I believe. From what I've read, from them, people have put them on trucks but one side of the frame needs to be notched. They are repo's of the car headers. I don't have any first hand knowledge.
I've emailed Joe Kugel and they still make them, About 800 bucks. He is going to send me some info
about the frame notch that is required on the passenger side. Very responsive.
The Kugel ones don't have the extra protrusion on the outside of the headers so they may fit on the passengers side without the need to notch the frame. There is a good inch difference not having them. Here's a thread with videos I made of the fit using some original shorty cast iron headers.
In that thread you can see the headers sitting on the table and the protusions are visible. Drivers side is actually bigger but I didn't have clearance issues on that side. Automatic truck, though, so no clutch linkage to contend with.
This is what you have to do. These are original Ford units. 1/2” of the frame has to be notched. Hope this helps. Info may not apply as this is a 63 4x4 frame.
Jim
How do they fit on the drivers side. Any issue with steering box and or shifter linkage?
I suppose the key measurement would be from the engine block to the outside of the flange to see what kind of space is required for them to fit.
Barnie, just steel against steel. No sealer of any kind.
The steering in my truck is the same as a F600.
It is a manual floor shift truck so no column linkage.
Thanks for the reply.....
I assume you had the cyl head exh flange face and the header flange face machine-surfaced to ensure they were smooth, flat and square ?
Have any of you guys thought about using FT cast headers? They are center dumps like the Yblock rams horns. You can block the center exhaust crossover by welding a stainless patch on them. I`m using a set on a 410 I`m building for my 64 F350. Should clear both sides with little or no cutting of the frame rails and should clear the steering and clutch linkage too.
