2021 f250. So I removed tailgate for winter for salt spreader. Disconnected wires for backup camera. Covered them etc. now put tailgate back on and backup camera doesn’t work as if it was still disconnected. Blue screen followed by black screen with “camera not available contact dealership”. Any ideas? Wires seem fine.
Bad connection perhaps. I know that the connects are very specific.
Perhaps take them a part and try again
yea I tried bunch of times. Nothing. Wondering if it needs to be updated or something. They did do an update with tailgate off when I was in for service so I’m wondering if that messed with it.

I would guess the computer has noticed the camera is not there. Did you put the dummie plug cap on the wire harness? I would guess that is why a dummie cap is included with all trucks that have the camera.
I did not use the plugs. I taped the connections to keep them clean. I found them after I did some research about the camera but nothing if they are anything but just a way to plug them clean.
I went and looked at the caps for my truck (2017) and they had contacts in some of the openings. Checked for resistance and continuity and they seem to have some ohmic value for some of the pins that tells me that they dummy a signal to the computer. The coax cap also had continuity. I think your problem stems from just taping off the connections and then getting an update done. I am not a Forscan guy so I can't help you with possibly re-enabling the camera that way. I am sure someone else on this forum can help you with that.
It was a Powerstroke Tech Talk video, forgot which one, but if you unplug the tailgate camera harness, it needs to be taken to a dealer to be reprogrammed to work properly again. Supposedly some were coming from the factory like that.
So my FIL took his tailgate off to put a wind gate on his 2017 F450. He had the 360 degree camera system on his truck, so he lost his backup camera.
He tried to put his tailgate back on a couple times, and the connections would NOT fully seat, so his tailgate didn't lock/unlock and the camera didn't get power. It is likely that your connections are not fully seated - if you've got the power locking tailgate, does that function as it should? If not then you likely aren't getting good connections.
I take my tailgate off every spring to load my truck camper and don't put it back on until the fall when I put the camper away for the winter. Been doing this since it was new and have never had a problem. I do use the caps that were supplied in the glove box to keep the weather out. Not sure what to tell you but would be interested in knowing what the dealer says in case it does happen to me sometime in the future.
