Oil cooler install problems

2002 f250 7.3 psd. I cant seem to seat the new oil cooler into the oil cooler housing and the oil filter housing. I’ve tried ratchet straps, and it keeps going on sideways and won’t seat in. Tried a rubber mallet and nothing. On the inside of the oil filter housing it’s getting gouged and the aluminum is starting to chip off. Help?

Are you lubing the o-rings and mating surfaces? Are you lining up the notches correctly? What size/width straps are you utilizing?

ibe added some oil to the orings but not the inside. I noticed that when I try to put the large oring in the housing, it won’t go in straight. It has to bend or kink if that makes any sense. Not sure on the side and width. I’ve used a large 10k lbs strap and a smaller one. Probably 2-3k lbs. the knotches are lining up

If you are utilizing a 2" strap then it will apply more pressure to one side when cinched. When I did the Excursion I lubed the o-rings good all the way around and then used a block of wood to cushion the blow from a hammer to get things started. I then put a 4" strap ratchet strap to force it together. Just when you think it's not going to go together after cinching down good, it finally squeezed on.

I was using a rubber mallet. I was hitting it as hard as I possibly could and absolutely nothing was happening

it’s been cold but I have a propane heater in my garage. I’d say it’s around 70-80° in there

Why aren't you putting both ends on at the same time...
