So, my battery in my 1995 F350 (5.8 C6 2WD crew cab) keeps going dead.
I got my volt meter out and disconnected the negative battery cable, and ran the volt meter in series set to the amps setting and plugged into the appropriate places on the meter.
I have a 4 amp draw coming from somewhere!
I started under hood, then to the cab fuse boxes pulling the fuses and relays one by one watching to see if the amps drop off...Nothing!
So, going back to the fender mounted relay i unplugged the two fusable links and the drain went away!
Now, here is where it gets interesting!
if I plug one or the other fusible links in (one to the alternator and one to the fuse box?) the 4 amp draw comes back.
My question is: does this mean the relay is toast?
is there something I'm overlooking?
I forgot to mention I unplugged all three connections to the alternator (D-Shaped plug, B+, and the small grey one) basically isolating the alternator from the rest of the circuit. Still had an amp draw of 4 amps.
Could be a bad rectifier diode within the alternator, may want to take it and have it tested if something else isn't obvious.
Ok, so I revisited the alternator.
and I have to admit, you were correct.
I only plugged in the wire to the alternator from the solenoid, and I was getting my amp draw. I unplugged the D shaped plug at the alternator and it stopped.
