This was a grand marquis(2001) with a 4.6. The 2003 explorer my gf has has the same engine. The 4.6 in the explorer(Not pictured) is quite a fit id say but its not TOO bad. This is EFI. 300. Look at this engine bay, the engine btw is a lot longer than the intake lets on. Its quite a bit in the firewall and that intake makes the engine bay tall. This is the side of the engine.
Thanks for the info. Wouldn't mind the old 5.0 like I had in my 82 Crown Vic. Probably none of those left though.
Yep like others said it WAS AN OPTION 96-01. You probably don't want the old 80s non-HO 5.0 with the plastic gears and low HP.
I am sure every JY in the country has a 5.0 Explorer with an engine you can get cheap and swap. They are considered some of the best 5.0's ever made. I think they are big with the Mustang Crowd too.
I remember they went to the 4.6 not long after my 82 Crown Vic went bye. Guess the newer 5.0 has no resemblance to the 82 one. I guess I'd try to get an Explorer already with a 5.0 and have the AWD swapped out to 4x4. Would look outside of the Rust Belt also! My current 98 XLT with the SOHC is doing OK, but have to fight the rust it does have so it doesn't get bad. My skills and especially equipment & location don't allow me to do the work myself. Just little stuff like thermostats and maintenance, bodywork and interior (although the interior is stock and very good as is!) BTW, what are the plastic gears you mentioned? Had to get rid of the Crown Vic as it finally needed a tranny and I didn't have the cash. Thanks for the info!

The ones before 86 had a nylon timing gear, That is how mine went anyway . Guy who did my water pump said for another $150 while its apart I strongly suggest to replace the timing parts. Said I'll think about it..he was right
Newer 5.0 is quite similar to the older one, but different intake, cams, etc. It is also fully fuel injected like a modern engine. I had an 85 CV it had a throttle body injection system - not the most reliable on the planet.
If you are not in a rust zone a 5.0 Explorer is probably the most reliable SUV you could buy. Usually they are junked after a wreck. With minimal maintenance they run forever.
4.6 came out in 91 on the towncar and 92 on the vic/marquis.
Thanks for the info! My 82 Crown Vic 5.0 (had LTD badge also) didn't die until 2004, and it was the transmission, couldn't afford the fix. Guess the 4.6 had been on the market for longer than I thought. I have seen ads for nice 5.0 Explorers, way out west. 1st and 2nd gens. Some owners really kept theirs nice! Back to the 300 straight six - Fell in love with the power of it, in an Econoline van (I think). Guess I'd have to get one of those, could be a good camping vehicle.

My 85 had lots of sorta minor electrical problems with the emissions system but it got straightened out. It had around 250k though. The AOD also crapped out. Used to slip. I got it fixed in the mid 90s, I think it was $600.
