As the title says, the factory 20” Lariat Chrome wheels on my ‘17 F250 are starting to flake off! I’ve had factory chrome wheels on several vehicles in the past and I’ve never had the chrome finish start flaking off! It seems like you can’t get anything good anymore!
It's fairly common.
The real issue is that it is not true chrome plating, it is chrome PVD coating, similar to powder coating.
If the surface under the PVD coating isn't perfectly prepped prior to coating it doesn't stick correctly.
They won't even prep the bed properly at Ford before the bedliner, of course the wheels wouldn't get prepped. You're right. Nobody does anything right anymore.
And don't use any kind of chrome polish on PVD wheels or other surfaces. Treat it like paint. What ever cleans the body of the truck use on the PVD wheels. I don't even use harsh wheel cleaner products on mine. Just ordinary car wash soap and water.
My 18" PVD wheels on my XLT Premium peeled too. My dealer was awesome and replaced all 4 under warranty. Six months later two are peeling again! I also just used carwash soap and water...

Perfect opportunity to put some fuel wheels on it!
I had PVD wheels on a ‘15 F150 that started flaking in the 2nd year. I had them again on an ‘18 F150 and had no problems for 4 years. The running boards on the ‘18 F150 started to bubble though in year 4. I wanted to stay completely clear of any chrome/PVD on my ‘22 F250, so I went with the black appearance package.
