Hey guys! This is my first post and hopefully you all can shed some light on a question I have. I currently have a low mileage 360 FE that I want to spruce up just a bit on a budget. Im planning on pulling it out sometime in the future and using a 428 crankshaft I have lying around to make it a 410. I’ve heard that you need a 428 crank, 390 pistons, and can use the stock 360 rods. But other sources claim otherwise on the rods. What’s the story and can I get away with using the shorter rods.
I believe the 410 was a 360/390 block with a 428 crank and 390/428 rods. the pistons also have a different pin height as I recall and that will be a challenge to do economically.
Turning your 360 into a 390 might be a better idea .
The FE technical forum would be where I'd go to get absolute answers there are a few true FE experts that hang out there.
390 and all other including 428, except performance versions of the 427 and 428, use the same "short" rod.
390 pistons with a pin height of approx. 1.77" are used in car 390s and in 360s on top of the long rod. In the 360 they sit over .100 down the hole.
Pickup 390s use the 410 piston with a pin height of approx. 1.66", and as a result they sit down the hole almost .100 also. So if you had a pickup 390 you could pop your 428 crank in there for a 10.5:1 410. Maybe that's why you were under the impression that "390 pistons" would do the trick. Kinda correct because the "410 piston" became the "390 piston" in pickups.
There are a lot of 360 conversions in the FE forum.
Your budget is going to get eaten up with cost of an FE rebuild, but you can have twice the power for the same gas if you do it right.
