89 F250

Just bought an 89 f250 last week and was hoping to bring it up to par. Ripped the carpet out and found a good amount of rust. I contacted a local shop and was told it was too far gone and I would spend a “tremendous” amount of money to repair. Any insight? I didn’t think it was god awful but I’m new to the game. I was planning on buying the new parts. Took out the seats, carpet etc. and wasn’t expecting it to be 1k to fix but what am I looking at here? I can’t weld so it needs to be done at a shop.

I've seen far worse.

That's fixable, and maybe worth it, depending on how bad the rust is elsewhere *if* you're doing the work yourself.

No shop is going to touch that for anything approaching a reasonable price, in my experience. Very few Body Shops are much interested in doing work that requires fabrication anymore, and if they do, they charge an arm and a leg for it.

That is a well used beater quality truck in my opinion. If you have to pay someone to do the work you will be seriously depleting your wallet thickness unfortunately. With an investment in the right equipment and knowledge you can repair/replace the rust. It's a steep slope to climb and rarely does anyone break even on these rusty project trucks. I bet the frame is toasted as well.

Re: "wasn’t expecting it to be 1k to fix but what am I looking at here?"

Is just the tip of the iceberg. Add another zero behind that to do everything right.

Thumbs up

You are better off to recab the thing if the rest of the truck is solid.

What is under the hood?

I don’t have photos of under the hood right now but can take some later. It’s only got 145k nothing crazy. I love these years and got the truck for cheap so would like to make it look decent. I guess I should learn to weld 🥴

Take a look at the frame and cross members as well as the leaf spring hangers for signs of excessive rust. The hangers are easily fixed. The frame not so much. Looks like you are in the northeast so salt is always going to be your enemy.

No kidding. In jersey. Finding a fixer upper of this year around here that is “decent” is hard to come by.
