Cam recommendation

I have a 1973 F250 High Boy with a 1965 thunderbird 390 4 bbl. The engine was rebuilt in 1983 and currently has 17,000 miles. The 390 runs strong no smoke. I am looking at upgrading to a hotter cam with a noticeable lope but not too radical I would also like to have more low end torque. Any recommendations are welcome. Thank you.

Yes, don't buy an off the shelf camshaft. For just a few more bucks you can get a custom grind that will give you want you need and maybe even a little more of what you want. Call Brent at Lykins motorsports' Personally I would go the route of a hydraulic roller, it's a little more but there is no need to break it in only to have a lobe possibly go flat. There are many on here that have broken in a hyd flat tappet cam and added the required Zinc additive in order to run it only to have a lobe go flat for no apparent reason. There are also plenty that have never had a problem. What's nice about a custom grind is if you have any future plans for a little more soup, like new intake and possibly some head work or even aluminum heads. That T-Bird may have 6090 heads. Alot can be done with those. He can set you up for the present with the future in mind. A custom cam is much more affordable than you might think

I can't make a suggestion but generally speaking a good first step is knowing the specs of the cam that is in engine now. Do you happen to have that info?

No idea until it gets torn down, sorry.

The CJ cam was for a 10.1 car that could do decent on the strip. and in a 390 the smaller displacement would make it a little worse. not that the CJ cam was that extreme it's just not a 4x4 cam.

A custom cam takes everything into account. not only your engine but gear ratio , tire size, transmission altitude , desired fuel grade everything. it's made for your vehicle not just a generic small block chevy grind. it's only a few bucks more and a no brainer for any rebuild in my opinion.

I don’t think I’d be in any hurry to order a custom grind roller cam. Buddy of mine is waiting a year or little over now for his from Craft. The story is Comp can’t get blanks from what they tell him. I thought waiting 2 months for mine was bad when stuff was available. Good luck!

I got one from Howard’s about 6-7 week wait. Lykins seems to be pretty ready to go also.

The comp family must be busy doing something, apparently it’s not monitoring emails or grinding cams.

When that engine was rebuilt, what compression ratio did they build it to?
