So the stock intake started leaking at the coolant crossover on the passenger side. Waited almost THREE months for Ford to manufacture new ones and I just picked it up last Thursday. I have a set of Mahl gaskets but I was wondering if I should replace the knock sensor that in the valley? I have 188k on the old girl and I'm concerned I'll remove the intake and find the knock sensor wiring chuffed or corroded
I'm only concerned because twice now I got stuck with the knock being bad after I pulled intakes. Once on my brother's 2001 f150 with 4.6, he only had 112k when I swapped his intake and the wires on the knock had all the casing missing! Second was on a buddies 2003 f150 super crew with 5.4, his coolant was leaking just like mine. I got to the point where I pulled the intake and one wire into the knock was corroded and broken off flush. And of course both times our ford dealer did not have them in stock so we jad to wait almost a week!
It's not fun having a truck stranded in front of my garage
I'd say yes, as long as you're in there, change it. The most expensive sensor at Rock Auto is under $30 ( cheap sensors are well under $20) so sure, it seems prudent.
I have not had a knock sensor issue but I know of others who have had rodent damage or corrosion issues. Maybe just have some wire handy and maybe an extra plug or 2 just in case.
I would consider replacing the knock sensor. I had a knock sensor that threw fault codes when it was damp outside until the engine heated up causing restricted performance. Granted it was a supercharged Jaguar so even restricted it had good street manners. Thing is I had the valley exposed when I had the supercharger off to replace coolant hose and it did not occur to me to look at the knock sensor. Now I suppose it could have had a chaffed wire or bad connector.
SuperDutyScaler:.......I have a 2002 Ford F 250 5.4L V-8 (gas) and also have the small coolant leak around the thermostat area of the crossover tube. I also want to get in there to replace the Intake Manifold as well as the Coolant Crossover as it is 20 years old. As far as the knock sensors (while I heave everything apart) what should I look for and exactly what makes up the knock sensor itself.
Have you done the work yet? How long does it take and what are we taking apart to get the Intake Manifold removed? How much time should I allot to get it done?
Thanks,
PJ
