Hi, I am not sure what type of clutch you have. I know of only 2 types "lever" and ????, I can't remember what it's called. Sorry. Also the linkage is either manual or hydraulic. You can identify this by looking for a slave cylinder and a clutch master cylinder.

Changing a clutch is a good 1 day job for someone that has never done it. Since your truck is lifted at least you have plenty of room. Set the parking brake and chock the tires.

Drop the drive shaft at the transmission output, disconnect the clutch linkage and back up light harness.

Remove the shifter from top of tranny.

Sometimes you can just slide the tranny back far enough with it still connected at the rear with the cross member and supporting it up front with a floor jack. I find it easyer to just remove the blasted thing. So, support the weight of the tranny with a jack and remove the rear cross member. Then remove the 4-6 bolts of the tranny to bell housing junction.

Now carefully slide the tranny stright back about a foot. When you see the tranny input shaft has cleared the bellhousing you can lower it.

Oops I almost forgot. You will probably need to remove your starter also as you next remove the 6-8 bolts holding the bellhousing on to the engine. When you get it off you will see inside the "throw-out bearing", replace it. Set housing aside.

Now you can see the pressure plate. It is held on with 6-8 bolts to the flywheel. When you remove this plate the clutch disk will fall free.

Now all that is left is the flywheel. Some folks stop here and just replace the disk and pressure plate but if I were you I would remove the 6 bolts holding the flywheel on and replace it also.

IMPORTANT: Look in the end of the crankshaft and you will see a small pilot bearing/bushing. Replace it. There is a special tool for this but I usually just manage with out it. This is what the tip of the tranny input shaft rides in.

You can buy a complete clutch kit that should have everything you need except the pilot bearing. This kit will also have an alignment tool. Install pilot and bolt on flywheel. Use the alignment tool to hold the disk by inserting tool into pilot bearing center. Now bolt on the pressure plate over the disk. Remove the tool. Put new Throwout bearing into the clutch folk in the bellhousing and bolt on bellhousing.

Now carefully raise the tranny and try to slide it forward. The splines on the input shaft have to line up with the disk. Sometimes it can be a pain to get things lined up. I always place a small jack under the bellhousing and jack it up just enough to line things up. Once you have the tranny started install the bolts, clutch linkage, shifter , and drive shaft.

Now you need to adjust the clutch. What your aiming for is when the pedal is out the throwout bearing is NOT contacting the pressure plate thus NOT spinning. Adjust the linkage for this.

Sorry this is so long and I hope I have not left anything out. If you have any questions just fire away.
Good luck,

Hi,

I ran your truck type over at a web site I use for the local parts chain here in the Northwest(Schucks Auto parts) they show that your clutch is a 10 inch or an 11 inch. The type of clutch that I could not remember in my first post is called a "Diaphragm" style. This is the most popular style made and what Schucks carries.

You may be able to up-size your clutch to the 11 inch if it is not already. When you take it apart just measure the clutch disk diameter to find out what you have. If yours turns out to be 10 inchs try posting a question in the truck catagory for yours and see what other folks say.

I up-sized my stock 11 inch to a 12 1/16 disk. I did not have to change flywheels as my old one fit it both.

For a stock clutch kit the web site shows around $170 for the 11 inch and $117 for the 10 inch. Remember that this does not include a flywheel. You can replace yours or at the very least take it to a machine shop and have it "Turned".

Jegs and Summit surely carry upgraded kits over stock but they will cost more.

As for your hydo clutch adjustment question I honestly don't know if they are adjustable or not. I don't think they are but.....

If ya come up with any more questions just fire away.

I've found that it's usually easier to lift the engine to change the clutch than it is to drop the transmission. If you have access to a hoise or cherry picker...

Luk makes a pro gold series clutch which is a heavy duty kit. It will upgrade your 10' clutch to an 11". Luk, who is oe in most of the domestic vehicles, designed the pro gold clutch for the 4wheelers and owners who tow alot. Most of the fleets I deal with will not use anything but the pro gold series. The cost is 195 compared to 125 for the standard 11". Let me know if you have any questions or need any help.
