Overhead light confusion - HELP!

I have a 2001 f250. I'm completely re-doing the interior, and I am installing an overhead console from a 2000 Ford Expedition. The overhead light on the Expedition has three wires coming out of it.. a ground wire and a hot wire for each lamp. My F250 only has two wires going to the overhead light.....a hot and a ground. How do I make the transition so that the Expedition overhead light will work the way it's supposed to.....coming on when the door is open and still operating each side independently on its own switch? I don't understand why there are three wires. Both trucks have independent lights that operate on switches and both trucks have lights that come on when the door is open and go off when the door is closed. Any of you electrical gurus out there help me with this?
