Tailgate Cap?

I'm trying to install a brand new factory cap on my L99 tailgate.
I removed the old one 12 weeks ago before the truck went to the body shop.
It seems that I had to pry it off with a screwdriver and it seems that I may need to use a soft rubber mallet to get the new one the rest of the way on.
I have it lined up perfectly and all the tabs and the 3 pegs are all through the sheet metal - I just don't want to force it and screw up brand new paint or the cap itself.
Any suggestions? Thanks!!

Use the mallet or smack it hard with the palm of your hand

Yep - a mallet works to get it in place. Just did this with an ebay unit awhile ago.

If you have the ability, it will be a lot easier to work with if it's heated up.

Nice pictures from BWST.
Mine looks like your old one.
The new one looks very ' clean '

As in: she looks real clean!

I have used the palm of my hand before, and later wish I would have used a rubber mallet.

Also I like the idea of leaving out in the sun for a few hours before applying.

I'm glad I happened upon this thread, my tailgate cap was damaged when I drug a dead bull out of the bed and is in sorry shape. My truck is an early 2000 F250 with a chrome cap. Where can I run across a new one that won't cost me an arm and a leg, it doesn't have to be chrome ?

This is what I purchased. So far so good. It will be interesting to see how it will age/fade over time.

I like that price better. I have been looking at this one to replace mine (it got ripped out in the wind one day). I have a rollout bed cover that is a pretty tight fit with the tailgate so I was worried this metal one would prevent the tailgate from closing.
